Emma Hapner’s practice centers on the color pink as a symbol of unapologetic femininity. She situates her figures within immersive pink environments, drawing on motifs from classical antiquity to reframe traditional painting through her perspective as a woman navigating the complexities of womanhood. Her work explores the duality of feminine experience, balancing strength, sexuality, and power with an enduring interest in beauty, softness, and traditionally “girly” aesthetics. Rather than existing in opposition, these qualities are presented as coexisting forces that inform and enrich one another. Hapner’s commitment to pink is both personal and conceptual. By enveloping multiple figures within saturated, hot pink spaces, she creates scenes that reflect the intimate, tumultuous, and ever evolving relationship with the self. Moving beyond the conventional association of soft pink with girlhood, she employs intense hues such as quinacridone red, magenta, and fluorescent pink to evoke a visual language that embraces both sensuality and strength.
